1. Please introduce yourself briefly in 3-5 sentences.

I’m Deborah Cooke and I’ve been writing romance, often with paranormal elements, since I sold my first medieval romance in 1992. I write historical romance as Claire Delacroix, and contemporary and paranormal romance as Deborah Cooke. I love dragon shifters, stories of love conquering all and wounded heroes who are protective—and even fierce.

2. What book(s) sparked your desire to write?

I always read a lot of fantasy, even before I discovered romance, and I loved being able to immerse myself in a fictional realm. Worldbuilding is one of the things I really enjoy about creating my own worlds, deciding what’s possible and what’s distinctive. Lord of the Rings was a big influence for me—I wondered what it would be like if Smaug was a good dragon. ☺

3. How long have you been writing romance?

Answered that already! Since 1992. I’ve published over a hundred books, medieval romance, Regency romance, paranormal romance, romantic comedy, contemporary romance, romantic suspense and even a paranormal YA spin-off from my Dragonfire series.

4. What’s your favorite romance trope or theme?

Second chance romances are big faves of mine. I like giving characters another opportunity to get it right, and I like that they have history together already. That adds dimensions to the story. One of the fated mate paranormal romances I really loved writing was Kiss of Fate—they’re fated mates who get a second chance when she’s reincarnated. Of course, Eileen doesn’t remember her past life or Erik, but this wounded hero finally gets his HEA.

5. What’s your favorite book you’ve written?

The official answer is the one I most recently finished, but there are some that I find particularly powerful. They’re usually the ones that have a lot of layers and interlocking stories so were a bit of a challenge to pull together – like Kiss of Fate, Serpent’s Kiss or Dragon’s Kiss. They’re almost always the PNR ones. ☺

6. Tell us something random about you.

I love crafting. Playing with colours and textures helps me figure out plot tangles. I knit a lot, I like to sew and recently I’ve started to build miniatures. My house is full of books and craft supplies.

7. If you had one piece of advice for someone interested in writing, what would it be?

Write the story you want to read.
